7-7:30 pm is social time. Meeting starts promptly at 7:30 pm. Program: Chuck Sheviak, former Curator of Botany at the State museum, will be bringing select and diverse pieces from his collection of Navajo weavings, along with historic photos and implements.. He will provide an introduction to Navajo weaving, touching on its historical roots and design evolution in response to external influences. Chuck is not a weaver, so his interest in textiles developed from a different perspective. His knack for critical investigation of details and patterns lends itself to the study of historic textiles. He has focused his analyses of the materials and methods used in weaving older pieces. The works of weaving that he is drawn to illustrates the lives and cultures of the weavers, in addition to their often incredible skill and artistry. With a slide show presentation, Chuck will illustrate typical textiles, including some intriguing mysteries and contradictions.
